Breaking the stigma around mental health and suicide through education

Why BCC Evolution??

The Founder Kelli Melissa Reinhardt (Hansen) lost her middle sister Carrie to a completed suicide on Feb 20th, 2017. BCC stands for "Because Carrie Cared". BCC also reflects on the theory behind Blind Carbon Copy emails, a person’s name is on the "bcc" line and they do not know who else's name is there. It is hidden and that is how we think about a Mental Health challenge, it is there, but you may not know it is there. Our goal is to get the hidden names listed on the "bcc" line to the "to" line to open up the conversation about mental health, so that we start breaking down the stigma. You cannot always see a mental health challenge or know how to address it until it is too late, and we lose a life to a completed suicide.

Our mission is to empower people to get educated and speak out about mental health and suicide, so that we break down the stigma and start saving lives.

Our vision is to stop the stigma and normalize the conversation about mental health and suicide through educational classes and community events to reach one million people by 2030.

Why is this all important?

According to the CDC:

  • 1 in 5 adults experience a mental illness in a given year.
  • 1 in 25 Americans lives with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression.
  • Suicide as cause of death in Colorado was #1 for ages 10-14 and #2 for ages 15-44 in 2019.

According to the Colorado Health Institute:

  • 1 in 10 people in Colorado did not receive proper health care in 2019.
  • Less than 1/3 of Coloradans who were diagnosed with a mental disorder (anxiety, depression, etc.) and who committed suicide received mental health care.
  • 42% of Colorado youth (LGBTQIA) considered suicide in 2019 verses 13.4% of heterosexual youth.
  • Systemic Racism in Healthcare is a real issue nationally and in Colorado.
